Screen Ireland has recently unveiled plans to expand its National Talent Academy Network, with Cultural & Creative Industries Skillnet (CCIS) leading the charge in establishing the new National Talent Academy for VFX. This move is part of Screen Ireland’s broader initiative to nurture a skilled and diverse talent pool across the country’s screen industry.
Colman Farrell, Head of Skills and Professional Development at Screen Ireland, expressed enthusiasm about the launch of the new National Talent Academy for VFX, emphasizing its role in addressing the growing skills needs of the VFX sector and providing opportunities for individuals from various backgrounds.
Gareth Lee, Manager at CCIS, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the potential for further growth in Ireland’s VFX sector and the Academy’s pivotal role in addressing ongoing skills challenges. He emphasized the importance of inclusivity, offering access to new entrants and providing upskilling opportunities for existing professionals.
The Academy’s overarching goal remains centered on diversity and inclusion, aiming to attract talent from diverse backgrounds and disciplines into the VFX sector while raising awareness of it as a viable career path.
CCIS will collaborate closely with key stakeholders across the country, including regions, community groups, and industry bodies, to establish a national Steering Group. This group, in partnership with representatives from Screen Ireland, will oversee the Academy’s activities and approve its annual workplan, supported by a fund of €600,000. CCIS will also initiate an open recruitment process to appoint a manager to oversee day-to-day operations.
Over the past 15 years, Irish post-production and VFX have flourished, establishing the country as a leading hub for international productions. Irish VFX work has received global recognition, with nominations for prestigious awards such as BAFTAs, Emmys, and Visual Effects Society Awards. Notable projects include Marvel Studios’ WandaVision and Spiderman – No Way Home, Netflix’s The Irishman, and HBO’s Game of Thrones.
